When can I fill out a Section 8 application to get help with my rent?
Every state in the United States has several housing authorities. These housing agencies run the rental assistance programs online like Section 8 and Public housing. Most PHA’s must keep their Section 8 waiting list closed because of the high demand for housing vouchers. The need simply out weighs the supply. HUD helps to fund these programs, but there is still limited funding overall. Depending on the Public Housing Agency in question, waiting lists may open and close very quickly.
Typically, a Section 8 tenant will pay about thirty percent of their monthly income towards their rent. Applicants that are in need of receiving help with their rent, are most familiar with the Section 8 rental assistance program. There are however, other housing assistance programs to choose from. The application process is always free.
How do I qualify for Section 8 rental assistance in Washington?
In order to apply for rental assistance you must first meet the requirements. According to HUD, you must earn at least 50% below the median income level, while taking your dependents into account. Housing authority preferences may also come into play. A housing authority may assign stipulations as to whom can apply for their various rental assistance programs. For example, a Section 8 waiting list might open only for the elderly or people with disabilities.
